Crisis Response Models

Mathematical modeling of alternative police response to mental health crises

Overview

A substantial share of police calls involve individuals experiencing mental health or substance use crises—situations where traditional law enforcement response may not be optimal. This project develops mathematical models to evaluate alternative police response frameworks, including co-responder models (pairing officers with clinicians) and mobile crisis units (clinician-only teams). By applying simulation and optimization techniques, this research helps communities design response systems that improve outcomes for individuals in crisis while making efficient use of limited resources.
